Recovery

Which Windows recovery option should I use?

Pick the least destructive recovery method for your situation.

Before you start

  • Back up important files before any recovery step that can alter Windows.
  • On encrypted devices, confirm you can access the BitLocker recovery key.
1

PC starts but something is wrong

Start with a troubleshooter. If available on your Windows 11 version, “Fix problems using Windows Update” can reinstall the current Windows version while keeping files, apps and settings. Then consider uninstalling a problematic update or System Restore.

2

Problem began immediately after a Windows update

Try Settings > Windows Update > Update history > Uninstall updates, or use WinRE > Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates if Windows cannot start.

3

Windows will not start

Use WinRE. Try Startup Repair first for boot problems, then update removal/System Restore where appropriate. Reset this PC is more disruptive and should come later.

4

Reset vs reinstall

Reset this PC can keep personal files but removes apps/settings. A clean installation from USB is more destructive and can remove everything; use it only when the less destructive recovery paths are unsuitable.
