Know which recovery option to use and what it will remove before proceeding.

Before you start

  • Back up important files first.
  • If device encryption/BitLocker is enabled, make sure you have the recovery key before starting.
1

Try less destructive recovery first

For a PC that still starts, use troubleshooters, Windows Update, app repair, DISM/SFC, update removal or System Restore before resetting.

2

Open Reset this PC

Go to Settings > System > Recovery > Reset PC. If Windows will not boot, use WinRE > Troubleshoot > Reset this PC.

3

Choose Keep my files or Remove everything

Keep my files reinstalls Windows while preserving personal files, but it removes installed apps and resets settings. Remove everything also removes personal files.

4

Choose Cloud download or Local reinstall

Cloud download downloads a fresh Windows image; Local reinstall uses files already on the PC. Follow the review screen carefully before confirming.

5

Do not interrupt the reset

Windows can restart several times. Keep a laptop connected to power. If you are selling/giving away the PC, review the additional drive-cleaning options presented by Windows.
