Before you start
- If BitLocker/device encryption is enabled, you may need the BitLocker recovery key in recovery tools.
- Disconnect non-essential USB devices and external drives first.
Enter Windows Recovery Environment
If Windows repeatedly fails to start, it may enter recovery automatically. If you can reach Settings, use System > Recovery > Advanced startup > Restart now.
Run Startup Repair
In Windows Recovery Environment select Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Startup Repair > Restart. Let Windows diagnose and attempt repairs.
If the problem began after an update
In WinRE choose Troubleshoot > Advanced options > Uninstall Updates and remove the most recent quality or feature update as appropriate.
Try System Restore if available
In Advanced options, System Restore can roll system files/settings back to a restore point without deleting personal files. Apps/drivers installed after the restore point can be removed.
Reset only after less destructive options
Use Troubleshoot > Reset this PC only if Startup Repair and other recovery options fail. Backups and the BitLocker key matter before doing this.
